For several years, I stayed with my mom every time she was in the hospital, even once for 3+ weeks following a stroke. I would never leave a vulnerable person alone there. Even the staff who are committed to the patient's care (and sadly, a lot of them DNGAF) miss a lot of warning signs.

My parents have had SO MANY surgeries over the years. Either the spouse or myself has ALWAYS stayed at least the first night. I am not saying everyone should, but it is normal for us across multiple health care facilities.

Yes and in my experience, hospitals welcome that and are set up for it with recliners or even sometimes cots for family to sleep in. It takes a lot of the burden off the staff.

Defensive about her choices when FIL has been in the hospital this year. (She almost left once before talking to the doctor after a surgery because visiting hours were over and I lost it.)

“Rules” are arbitrary. Obviously if they were serious your mom would have been kicked out. What a sad reaction to someone offering care and comfort to their partner.
