Ive always had the impression that at least for some time there was this phase where anime had to be depressing, dark, edgy and bleak or it wouldnt be taken "seriously" and a lot of anime (which i remember being somewhat popular at least here in spanish weeb/otaku culture) were born out of it

I was mostly talking about anime itself, as in, more anime were being pumped out intentionally trying to be dark and edgy

but i did also go through my "darker = better" phase on anime, i remember watching Another and School Days specifically and going "thsi is fucked up... AQESOME" and acting
