Recruiting campaign and apparently a signing bonus. A Canadian perfusionist we know, living and working in the US, was offered a $30,000 employment bonus to return back to BC. However it in no way makes up for the large salary gap. The unit they work in, out of 20 staff, has 5 Canadians.
What about same privileges for commonwealth trained. Know one British doctor who went back due to retraining requirements. And was the only specialist in their field on the island. Not the only one by a long shot. It’s a start but needs to be broader
And for clarity. Commonwealth not only Britain. All around world. And we have many commonwealth immigrants already here who can’t practice because of current rules.
I think that poaching sorely needed physician assistance from other nations which already have sufficient training to meet our internal standards is necessary and also unhelpful to the nations losing them.
We could take Strongbow off the shelves at the BCL until Starmer's attitude improves too.
Tariffs are for imports, not exports. It sounds like maybe what you want is an export tax on lumber to further increase the cost for Americans to purchase our lumber? Even though the Trump tariffs are already increasing the cost for Americans to purchase it?
I guess what I’m really after is a tit for tat. Example, Ford exports hydro and tacked a 25% tariff on that. He then thought he might cut it off completely. Well I’m sure you know all of this. I would like our exports to add a 25% tariff to the US.
We have some Canadian tariffs so far which mean that when we buy American products (the ones subject to a tariff) it will cost an extra 25% to us. Importers pay this cost and generally pass it along to consumers through a price increase.
Because it's not a tariff - that's what I already said and a few others have said too. It's a *surcharge* that the seller of the product, placed on the product. It just so happens the government is the seller of that specific product. If the government isn't the seller they can't place a surcharge.
What he did was add a 25% surcharge on the price because the government sets that price as they own the hydro company. We can’t set a surcharge like that on lumber because the province doesn’t set the price, individual companies do.
It’s a delicate balance because we don’t actually want to stop selling things to the US - that is bad for our economy. We have to be mindful to try and respond appropriately while doing as little damage to our own people as possible. Any tariffs we add costs *us* money. That’s how they work.
Well Einstein here’s a fact for ya.
“Josie was appointed the Minister of Health in November 2024. She previously served as Minister of Municipal Affairs, Minister of Land, Water and Resource ...“
So who’s not following along ???
It's being fixed with a new medical school at SFU. Takes time to get the fruits of it. Wish previous governments had had better foresight and done this earlier.
Will the B.C. government/Health ministry fix the shitshow that is the current payment system?
No point in recruiting people only to have them quit in disgust when they have to fight for the money owed to them.
That’s true. Just in 2024 my husband and I had to pay $9000 out-of-pocket for his four hour heart procedure no overnight in the hospital then I had to pay $8100 for dental work and that’s what good Obamacare medical insurance. It’s a nightmare.

Josie Osborne has been Minister of Health since she was elected in 2020. She's the MLA for mid-Island.
Anyway, I appreciate Eby's measured approach to tariffs, as it gives us room to ramp up over time and as the circumstances require.
