Thank you for the reply, Shoshana. I don't live in Israel, but my mother did for many years and I have been there a number of times. I have never met anyone who lived in Gaza, although I have met and become friends with a few West Bank Arabs. Have you met many Gazan Arabs?

I'm a Jew in NZ. I've studied Israel/Palestine by news and media for a few decades. Hamas has told us of their intentions since the 1980s. We might have believed that ordinary Gazans didn't share the objectives, though refugees from Gaza like Dor Shachar tell us different.

But happenings on and since Oct 7 tell us different. Civilians joining in the atrocities and kidnappings. Teenage boys enlisting with Hamas. Not one Gazan taking the promised reward and safe evacuation to save a hostage.

Yes, you're absolutely right. But we also know that Hamas was absolutely brutal to their own people when they were suspected of cooperating with Israel. That was Yahya Sinwar's first job when he got out of Israeli prison. So it's hard to draw conclusions about the general populace /1

when they are living under a terrorist regime as well as an occupying power. All I want to say is that even though thousands of Gazans participated on October 7th, 2 million plus people live there. I don't think it furthers the cause of peace to paint every one of them with the same brush.
