I thought we'd left such stigma behind. 18th months to be seen by MH services, in and out of hospital - a revolving door - plus 2 years until final diagnosis. Patient: a 25 yr old who worked when possible, and was valued by an understanding employer (more needed). And more education for politicians.

They don't see self diagnosis as valid. Self diagnosis is literally the first step of the journey for a lot of people in the world, but if these idiots actually pulled their finger out and sorted the healthcare system, we would have actual paper diagnosis to work with.

A benefit assessor wouldn't take any self-diagnosis seriously. Indeed even with a mountain of evidence from medical professionals an assessor can overrule & deny anyone social security. Claimants of all ages are already face some conditionality whether or not they are fit for work.

Physical conditions too. I saw a report of a young woman with mobility problems who was getting a benefit (cannot remember which one) for people with disabilities.

At an ATOS(?) assessment she managed to walk a few yards unaided.

They decided that she was fit based on that and stopped benefit.

Getting personal independence payments is a challenge, it doesn’t relate to mental state but physical activities. Some of those struggling with their mental state get rejected routinely.

Work can be really good for our mental health, but not for everyone. Bullying, toxic environments and lack of reasonable adjustments for health problems and neurodiversity can be very damaging. We need to understand what is going on for young people who don't feel able to work or study.

If it’s “self-diagnosed” mental illness there’s no PIP. Actually a very small proportion of people who live with chronic mental illness receive benefit. If the Doctors my 21 yr old daughter who eventually had a Tumor removed is anything to go by, getting a diagnosis is a challenge.
