BREAKING: A federal appeals court upheld a law that could result in TikTok being banned in the United States by the middle of next month, putting the future of one of the largest social media platforms in the country at risk.

Funny, they don't care about how Facebook had the Capital Hill attackers plotting, and it and X are full of propaganda for old people, who have trouble telling which posts are real news.
If it was coordinated, then it was a very effective campaign. Drowning peoples emotional battery 🪫 peppered with mistrust. Pushing a hypernormalisation, one symptom of which is mistrust, another apathy.
It's so wild to me that most of the major platforms are openly spreading right wing propaganda and everyone spends their time being angry about the Imagined Crimes of the Chinese
Elon Musk openly is reshaping X to push Nazi content but let's get mad at what we imagine tiktok might do
According to John Oliver's #LastWeekTonight segment on #TikTok Nov 21, 2024: PEW Research Center says -- "A third of US adults, including a majority of adults under 30 - use TikTok."

TikTok has far better metrics and production tools. It's also allowed on military bases. Regardless of ownership, this ban is so much more about surveillance and sentiment measurement of citizens by the current corpo-fascist hegemony. It's also completely anti-competitive.
Are these mimicry trends a bit scary? Yes, but so is the stupid pumpkin spice bullshit on GMA. It's the same thing, and the outcome is still a bunch of idiots doing the same stupid shit.
Update from TikTok: “The Supreme Court has an established historical record of protecting Americans' right to free speech, and we expect they will do just that on this important constitutional issue,” spokesperson Michael Hughes said in a statement.
I might be in the minority to agree that Tiktok should be banned - I’ve never been a fan of 6 second videos and Tiktokers. Just silly and kind of annoying to me for some reason. Hope we can go back to longer format video content consumption!
There is so much more to tt than 6 second videos. It is a powerful tool for communication. It is a place to learn and connect. It is a place to organize and educate. People did so much good after Helene. I urge you to look deeper! 🫶
I would say at the core this is about manipulation. TikTok has an algorithm that on its face seems to push misinformation and very erroneous reports on events screwing people perception of events. There is also a real threat that this is being used by foreign governments to manipulate US citizens
I mean yes, but I feel like most of that could have been copied onto any other social media algorithm. It's not a tiktok issue. Also, I do not trust facebook or twitter's motives anymore than I would a foreign governments.

Wonder why ?
There is nothing keeping Tik Tok from being spun off except the Chinese government - retain ownership of profit streams but not control of site.
TikTok is now going to promote millions of videos worshiping the new president elect, appealing to his ego…
That’s how they gonna save the platform …

At least BlueSky is transparent. Popularizing open source social media platforms is the only way us users can manage the current short comings!
I don't want TikTok with my data either but just banning them to allow those two "reputable" organizations to only have our data......sheesh.
