Most of those other cases were not the same strain that this individual has contracted. Most other infections were of a milder strain associated with dairy cattle and some poultry farms.

There are no "milder" strains of H5N1, mild outcomes in people at this point are a result of some combination of maladapted virus, transmission dynamics, and viral load. A well adapted human-to-human pandemic H5N1 will almost certainly not be mild.

Ah, let me rephrase, this genotype -D1.1 (Louisiana infection)-is different than the other “recent” cases in humans. D1.1-seems to have worse symptoms than other genotypes have, so far, shown. So don’t play with the dead poultry/birds. Wear gloves, double bag them and put them in the trash.

The LA case is the same genotype as the BC, Canada case (+ a few U.S. poultry workers in PNW).

I maintain a dashboard of relevant U.S. seasonal Flu A and H5N1 indicators, southward bird migration probably driving infections, I expect more throughout the South:

But it sounds like it was a direct avian infection. Which is good as it means that it's still not spreading from human to human. Fingers crossed, because that's when things escalate quickly.
