On Thursday, Chinese officials retaliated against President Donald Trump’s tariffs by imposing new restrictions on US movies. That’s a big blow to America’s cultural cachet in the nation.

Great article. Based on my experience teaching #politicalscience the average person doesn’t know what soft power is or how incredibly important it is, especially if you’re lacking in the diplomacy area.
On the other hand, if we stop making movies for chinese audiences, maybe we can return to big budget movies with character development, nuance, and plots?
China’s influence on movies is censorship of things like LGBTQ people, criticism of their government, etc. not making the movies not having “character development, nuance, and plot.” That’s an American choice if anything given how media literacy has plummeted.
Trump's economic policies will have far reaching detrimental consequences that we haven't even realized yet. We can now add a hit to the American movie industry (in addition to air travel, tourist industry, small businesses... on and on.)

So they own this. 😝
Movies also account for the services *surplus* that the US enjoys (for now) with the rest of the world.
