Cars haven’t exactly been cheap in the US for a long time. But Trump’s auto tariffs may sound the death knell for the somewhat accessible, under-$30,000 car.

I’m 46 years old and I have never owned a new car. Can’t afford one as someone with chronic pain and mounting medical bills at every turn. Idk why anyone thought cars were affordable before the tariffs hit.
They're not cheap bc they grow in size every single year. That is the primary mechanism by which manufacturers get people to upgrade - bc after 3-5 years their tank of a car is already starting to feel small & thus "scary" to drive. Amazing marketing work has been done targeting women in particular.
No probs, the extra price will go towards "good American jobs" somewhere. In other words, an acceptable, "free market" stealth tax on buyers...meanwhile outright income taxes on carmakers are socialist and unamerican lolz
It’s like he doesn’t understand that if people can’t buy cars then they won’t need that gas he so desperately wants to drill in the arctic because people will have no choice but to use public transportation
It is already gone. The car I bought 3 years ago with a post covid surcharge was $35K. A friend bought the same model this week for $47K. Plus, car insurance has doubled. And gas, while it should be going down with the price of oil, is not.
Our old (98) Truck broke down this summer. And today I'm actually relieved. Because we bought a new truck (the used market is ridiculous right now), before all this insanity. I'm relieved because if it happened a year or two from now, we probably couldn't have afforded it.
Someone will debut a car with limited to no technology features. Sporting the efficiency gains while benefiting from the lack of technology. Nice car no tech, still with leather, half the cost.
Everyone always wants more, car manufacturers forget that everyone doesn’t want a iot thing on wheels. They just want wheels. Someone will remember or be reminded. The older vehicle prices are increasing as people are buying used more often.
