I believe you need internal PM that will hold your flag and support big picture / vision of your business and consult with outside market experts at the same time. Then you'll need to make conclusions internally.

Definitely agree the internal product trio remains with PM/ founder at top, and conclusions are prob internal.

Does this mean internal PMM, and making the trio a quad, is wrong direction then?

I believe it's vital to bring subject matter expert into advisory board, it very much depends on whether it's just "professional" in her field or has also hands-on experience building software solutions (know all consequences of decisions). In the end, you'll always need strong leader to decide.

Sounds plausible. The trouble is that before PMF, there are a lot of things that would be ideal, but you have no money to pay for.

You need an engineer or 2. Perhaps a designer. Everything after that can be a stretch, especially if you’re not in SV with access to $

Very good point. As time goes on, I think the need for the outsider is even greater though? You get some of it with new hires but I think they can lose perspective quickly too.

PMF is a state and not a final destination, so you gotta keep working on it. And the bar for keeping it gets higher all the time.

The way we’ve found to focus on it is with the help of our customers - we talk to them as much as possible and have processes to distil learnings back in to roadmap

I’ve worked in companies where the founder is a visionary, where they were 100% about the customer and others where they find some other way.

I think everyone needs a process. For some, I could imagine that external perspective is helpful
