Any party that supports an arms race without a peace drive will be obliterated when the austerity that will pay for it hits. Any party that gives force to the drift into war will be destroyed when the body bags start returning.

What makes the situation even more dangerous is that the left, in many countries, has abandoned any demand for peace and deescalation to the far right. SUPPORTING THE DRIVE TOWARDS A WAR THAT WILL BE EXTREMELY UNPOPULAR IS SUPPORTING THE RISE OF THE FAR RIGHT IN EUROPE.

The European warming is bound up with the idea that Putin may otherwise attack all of Europe. But do you think that Russia, which can't even win a war against Ukraine, has infinite appetite or capacity for war? Invading Nato and EU states is a completely different matter than invading Ukraine.

War is always a losing proposition for anyone except those who profit from it and those who can afford to protect themselves from its consequences. War will also serve to repress social justice fights, delay climate action, and accelerate climate collapse.
