Jokes aside, i think we both appreciate the importance of thinking through one's position from where one is situated. I don't pretend to be able to explain anything to folks in Ukraine, but to stake out a left position from within the left in the EU
Obviously if you disagree with any particular point i make rather than with my right to speak on matters that also concern me, I'm ready to discuss and learn.
https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/trump-ukraine-imperialism good starting point from Ukrainian socialists.
You are talking about "demanding peace" but that in practice means being against arms supplies to Ukraine and not about giving Ukrainians any security guarantees.
There are many kinds of peace, and the only viable one is a peace with security guarantees and a Ukrainian capacity to defend itself. But driving Russia out of Ukraine, as many EU politicians maintain is the aim, is deluded and extremely dangerous.
I don’t think there’s a question about whether this is imperialistic expansionism, or that concessions made to Russia wouldn’t be incredibly unjust. It is, and it would be.
However, unless nato puts boots on the ground, Russia is likely willing and able to throw more bodies at this war.-
-If not through peace negotiations, including what security guarantees can be made, then I also don’t see how this won’t be a war of attrition that Ukraine isn’t at all certain of ‘winning’, however that even looks like now.
Agree about the dangers. My opinion is that they should be supplied with as much arms and support as possible, rather than the drip feeding we've seen over the last 3 years. That is far from certain to be successful but it gives them a chance and more Rus losses-more chance of negotiations.
As a comparison- would you be telling Vietnamese people in the 70s that they should stop receiving arms and sign peace because they are not getting anywhere? ( And it certainly looked that way for a while)..
If we go with your (bad) comparison, I am a Soviet or Chinese citizen telling their states not to send troops to North Vietnam or otherwise risk a direct confrontation between nuclear powers.
I fully understand and support Ukrainians' desire to defend themselves and their country.
