the CPC engaged in popular front policies till the establishment of the PRC at least, and I would contend that the specific policy taken toward the KMT in the '20s was justified until at least the death of Sun Yat-sen

The CPC abandoned the popular front after getting massacred for it in Shanghai, Guangdong and Hunan in 1927.

It was a disastrous policy that led to millions of unnecessary deaths and set the revolution back 20 years.

The policy helped the CPC gain its earliest credibility and roots with the Chinese masses as well as recruits. I think staying away from the KMT would've been seriously detrimental to its growth as a party. Its failure was in trusting the continuation of the original KMT line (forgot class struggle)

Having backup from the outside doesn't change the relationship between the party and the people of the country :) they successfully implemented the policy as opposed to the other Fronts being criticized.
