a "self-hosted" solution with centralized auth that makes you pay to use your own hardware was always ridiculous to me.

after using jellyfin for so long, i can definitely say it has its issues that you'll have to bear with. but hey it's not disgusting like plex

Yea, definitely sounds fair to me... I can navigate tech stuff fairly well, at least software wise, so here's hoping Jellyfin wouldn't give me too much trouble!

in terms of actually managing the instance it's basically nothing; install and start, go to it to create your admin account, create your library and you're done

the pain is mostly managing metadata, and something you actually can't always do as the admin: making sure clients are configured right

if you're doing only movies and tv then it's mostly fine

anime metadata is a bit dreadful (you'll quickly get acquainted with the identify screen) but that's not jellyfin-specific

avoiding transcoding mostly comes down to using the apps at all (don't just go through your browser). except anime...

Used Plex for many years, Plex pass became a bit pricey, so moved to Emby years ago, Then they pulled similar shit so moved to Jellyfinn, I don't feel it's as nice but does the job!

I've had a Plex lifetime license for many years (before Jellyfin existed), but if I had to start over I'd probably try Jellyfin first. I'm much more passionate about Libre software now than I was 8+ years ago when I first got into self hosting.

Plex is the premiere goto. It's worth the money if you want the ease. Jellyfin is free and works after more tinkering, and needing a VPN or reverse proxy for external use. Pick your poison
