That makes me mad LOL if you can afford to uproot your entire life and move to another country you can afford to download a free language learning app and work at it. Canada actually offers free english classes for immigrants here though, I doubt you guys do

Most people moving like that aren't affluent people, they're doing it for work, and are doing it because they're desperate, it's very difficult to just download some language guide when you're homeless, don't have net access or even reliable phone access.

they never had the opportunity.

we also typically have English classes. they start to learn it once they are here in classes.
so you have to give people a grace period.

I'm anti illegal immigration across the board too. Get refugee status if you're fleeing somewhere dangerous, otherwise do it legally. This only seems to get people labelled racist in English speaking countries, which is probably a large part of my annoyance.

Also English is a fucking weird language, it's borderline incomprehensible at times with ignoring it's own rules, shit's not easy to just learn in a bad situation.

its like 3-5 languages mashed together and often doesnt follow its own language rules.

a lot of stuff i think one needs emersion and years in it to get nuances as we use words/phrases in ways that dont mean what the words directly would translate to. because new gen started a new meaning

Mine's not even perfect and I started learning it as a kid, some words don't make any kind of logical sense to people with other first languages, and the rules English has for structures is very fucking weird.
