The revenue accrued on these parcels—known as state trust lands—comes from activities like fossil fuel production, mineral exploration and extraction, timber harvesting, and other commercial leasing (including slivers of renewable energy production). Leases are both above and below ground:

In total, we identified nearly 2 million acres of state trust lands — an area larger than the state of Delaware — that are reserved for state prison systems. In 2024, those state trust lands disbursed an estimated $33 million in funding to carceral facilities and programs.
