so much of what has gone sideways in conversations about pop culture in the last few years is basically the "are you trying to order a milkshake from Home Depot" tweet

there is so little curiosity about what a piece of media is TRYING to do, so how do you know if it accomplished it or not?!?

Years ago I saw Film Crit Hulk say something I remember as boiling down to "asking if a movie is good or bad is meaningless, what's important is what is the movie trying to do or say and how does it achieve that for you" and, like, yeah. In art there should be a priesthood of all.
