Part of the problem with this protest is it makes it far more likely that developers will just fence off sites rather than face this sort of flak.

Spot on with the ridiculous headlines. It doesn't stop it being a shame though. Mercato as it currently is has been a real gem of south London and as your write up mentions has actually turned into a pretty successful enterprise with multiple locations.

I'm also sure that if you go back to 2016 you can find people complaining about "hipster gentrifiers opening a food hall that doesn't benefit local businesses".
