it's a removal because it has become a political war between the 2 different mayors (Tees valley and Mibro). The misdesign was twofold:
Using the small 'orcas' to delimit the lane, that do nothing to deter cars, but trip pedestrians and jar cyclists
Not joining the bike lane with nearby ones

Have a look on CycleOSM - biking through Teesside University to the centre of town is more reasonable, but bridging the different existing paths wouold make a lot more sense. https://www.cyclosm.org/#map=14/54.5546/-1.2517/cyclosm

Also the council would regularly use the bike lane as a dumping ground for road signage when doing road works, making it even more hazardous

I don't know how you'd unpick that from the other changes in town. There's a lot of foot traffic there and it's near the uni, but the rioters last summer might have put people off a bit.

Yeah, you're right of course. It's just a shame that business owners (who are always anti these schemes cos they lose the right to park outside) often seem to get uncritically quoted in the media when there's no evidence to back up their claims (no ref to riots in the piece, for example)
