Also, there's a tag some folks add if they feel they can't add their own/don't have the spoons - # alt 4 me without spaces - to kindly ask a volunteer to write alt text for them in replies. I'm sure there are plenty of us pirates who'd be willing to help with that if we spot it 💖

when i started, i found myself getting annoyed that i couldn't post without it. then i thought, if i can't take 5 extra minutes before i post my dumb joke, is it even worth posting? do i want to be that careless about what i share?

it doesn't have to be perfect. just try and it'll get easier.

posting my SMAU has radicalized me to this. At first I was like "ohh man this will take soooo long" but it doesn't have to be fit for the louvre, it just needs to let people know what's going on in the image. If I can do that for 50 text-heavy images in a row I can do it for everything else

Yes, alt text was part of the culture here before the Twitter influx, and in addition to the inclusiveness, it also helps with muting terms, searching posts, and bringing more posts into feeds, so like a quadruple win.
