US actually built the Alaska Highway during WW2 when US feared an invasion. President asked Prime Minister for permission. It took 9 months to build. 1942.
Sorry, I'm being unclear in my grumpiness: I don't mean the US we've been dealing with for the last decades, an overwhelming but generally beneficial trade partner. I mean the US we're dealing with now, who apparently think mutual benefit is a sucker's game.

And we also use their roads for free, in the form of Mexican goods coming to Canada
