I became aware of Bluesky during the media coverage of various controversies with Elon Musk and X, these media reported on alternatives to X. I learnt about AT Protocol on Bluesky. Apart from as an alternative to X, Bluesky advantages are not well reported in the media.

Cool. next step is to get and use your own legal domain here for your handle. What makes 2nd gen socials like bluesky better is we can own ourselves here, what makes it yet better is if we actually do.

I'm actually thinking about doing this, but I still don't understand it entirely. If I connect a personal domain, does that *just* give me a custom handle on my account or will it also end up making it easier for me in the future if I want to move to a different, federated, platform?

If your handle is `@example.com` and then one day Bluesky shuts down, you can switch to a new site and everyone will still know you as `@example.com` because you control the handle not Bluesky. The decentralized account data is separate, it doesn't depend on handles ... 1/2

2/2 ... your data is linked to a "Decentralized ID" (yours is did:plc:ydbndrxluvpw2ad6arm7qzlt) which is separate from your handle, a handle is a pointer to a Decentralized ID. Think of domain handles as a way to own your human-recognisable identity on social platforms.

I am also here because of @davidimel.com. I was never really an X user, but Instagram and Facebook have been getting worse and worse. It has been a nice ride here, feels more healthy.

Here because of David as well. Twitter was mainly a source for hockey information by the time I gave up on it but bluesky actually has a large community here for it.

I tried Mastodon as a decentralised earlier but then there weren't much people to follow so I deleted the account and joined BlueSky but BlueSky was also the same so used it less frequently until David mentioned. Further, after the US election results there was a massive influx

I was reading about the AT Protocol @davidimel.com and found out it has an entire ecosystem under the hood where all interactions by an user are signed by their DiD which is linked to their username and all data is stored in a structured tree format which can ported much easily across AT network

Most of a year ago. As part of a comprehensive effort to find new entertainment after Musk degraded Twitter and I realized that Facebook entirely sucked.

I focused on mastodon at first but got kicked out of a couple of instances for completely spurious reasons and was refused participation in others unreasonably. I stuck in https://mastodon.social but came to the conclusion that mastodon is encourages narrow mindedness.

I also did Threads and Tribal. Threads is Meta and boring. Tribal has a bad UI. Like four or five clicks to post and it doesn't work well with pasted images. Blech.

I found that Bluesky was more fun. When I figured out to use lists to give me controllable variety in my browsing and then, after November, to reduce the amount of political horror I experienced, it became my goto.

Also, I am technical and have a large admiration for AT Proto.

I never used Twitter to begin with. It was outside of ny interest and once it started being relevant for me, it changed and became X. I heard about Bluesky on the WVFRM podcast too. I would love to have more local accounts to follow. I am from the Czech Republic and didn't find that many yet.

Hey 👋🏻, been on and off BlueSky since it was announced early on. I thought it was nice because it was open source, decentralized. Once Elon bought Twitter and started changing things for the worst, that’s when I really started using it.

Tech in it is really cool too, and leadership is based.
