I’m gonna say Dawn was no more annoying a character than would be expected for a little sister with big emotions & Michelle Trachtenberg did great in the role.

It was written into Michele's contract that she never be in a room alone with Joss Whedon.
It can be difficult to do your best work while worrying about Handsy Boss being creepy
Was it actually in her contract? The way I heard it, it was an unofficial set rule that everyone set up to keep Joss away from her. It feels like something being in the contract would be more legal scrutiny than the corporate overlords would have tolerated abt set conditions.
That's how it was relayed to me. (I didn't research it so there's your grain of salt)
Joss is a predator horndog who hires girls he is attracted to.
If it was an unofficial set rule then it means everyone knew about Joss and still let it go on.
That's so gross!
In the 90s, it was much easier to be quietly blackballed for making a stink. And folks kinda had to whisper network with each other. It sucks that a lot of folks were working under those conditions but it really wasn’t the same as now. Even the 2010s saw Eliza Dushku dealing with shit on Bull.
Ah the 90's, I remember them well.
Nothing has really changed as far as being blackballed. They just call it something else now. "She's difficult on set" is enough to sink a career.
I never understood that complaint. Back when I was watching Buffy I wasn't in any way part of the fandom at large, so when I saw people complaining about her character later, I was very confused! She was playing a teenager, as a teenager. Same with Wesley Crusher, actually.
I think people struggled in part because season 6 is one of the most uneven overall, and a great deal of it is centered around Dawn. She also acts more like a typical teenager than the older Scoobies did in the earlier seasons, so some viewers found that a bit jarring (myself included).

Even now Blake Lively is fighting against Baldoni and having to prove things & be litigated for her behaviour while his fans make a huge stink.
I hope Michelle had people praise her in her space for her performances bc fandom was kinda brutal re her character.
