One of those - named Eliza - just finished a big job in Metro Detroit about a year ago, I wonder where it’s off to next. The project had a website and shared footage of the machine finally breaking through the wall of the destination shaft at the end of its run, right on target.
this will be a soft-ground tunnel, like our Shoreline tunnel to the north.
the rocks Avery breaks through are called spoils and they are carried up and out of the tunnel on a conveyor belt system. they end up in a special designed trough at the surface where they are scooped up and hauled away.
the tunnel boring machine is in its final stages of preparation before it is lowered to begin its journey digging out Southerly Storage Tunnel later this spring.
this same TBM most recently mined our Shoreline Storage Tunnel.
stunning photos yet again c/o our own @nicoleharvel.bsky.social
yes, our Southerly tunnel is one of 7 such tunnels in our Project Clean Lake program. they will help capture combined sewage for treatment and prevent overflows to the tune of 4 billion gallons a year.
They're traditionally named after a local woman. In DC we had one named Lucy Diggs Slowe (co founder of AKA, its Af-Am woman to head a university) which is just the best possible choice.
