Reminds me of Lem’s novel Solaris and Tarkovski’s film. An ocean planet is discovered that is a focal point of some cosmic consciousness. It reads the unconscious desires of the scientists sent to study it and appears to them each in a particular form. An id machine. Conscious of the unconscious.

Dr. Davis seems to end up in a similar place to Dr. Rupert Sheldrake, even if his citations were more scientific than philosopher in tone as in Sheldrake's case (he does hit electromagnetic research though).
