If you think about it as being what doctors use to close up a wound when sutures aren't the right choice, it makes more sense. And it's basically the same thing.

I've tried that a couple of times. It burns. I'll have to keep trying. Thanks for the working hand suggestion.
You would think that super glue would sting in a similar way, but it's not nearly so bad.
Sadly I can't suggest much that hasn't already been said about healing bloodied cracks but I can make some preventative recommendations. What's worked for me is a combination of things:

2. As others have mentioned, there's no substitute for regular use of moisturizer, though what works best for me is applying it before bed so my skin has plenty of time to absorb it before I wash my hands again.

If you can’t find vitamin E cream, any good hand cream will do.
walking on ice can be a real hazard.
