And Rubber Soul was the last album where the American label were allowed to put out their own track list (that version starts with 'I've just seen a face', I think, and doesn't have 'Nowhere man'). It played a big role in making the album a thing in itself and not just a collection of songs.

I know, it's just mental to think now that those idiot bean counters were given creative control over The Beatles—The Beatles for Christ's sake—albums. 'In The Wee Small Hours' was nearly ten years before this, and still studios hadn't copped on to the album as art form: happily mutilating away!
