Begging young artists with less experience to realize that art styles can often have exaggerated proportions on purpose for the sake of an art style. That doesn't make the art bad.

Again I feel like everyone forgets the Hellsing anime and manga.
The mangaka loves LOMG over exaggerated limbs π«
Within reason of course but still. β€οΈ
Once, at 16 I think, i finally tried to make something more stylized and a friend of mine (no longer a friend lol) told me smthg like "hmm the proportions here and here seem out of place :// looks unreal" i really thought I did something wrong-
as a younger artist, i have met soo many young artists who wonβt practice realism at all, wonβt do studies, wonβt take critique well, and still give awful critique while wondering why their art wonβt improve , itβs important to learn realism before stylization. itβs still based on reality.
BTW just incase anyone takes this the wrong way, one piece is in my top 3 anime/manga of all time. I've watched the dub, the sub, and read the entire manga up to wano lol.
Begging young artists with less experience to realize that any art isn't bad just because you dislike how it looks. Look into what makes it different instead of punching it down immediately!
firm disbeliever that you have to "know the rules before you break them" like yeah that can help if you have a specific journey in mind for art but over all ART IS ABOUT CREATING just enjoy the process and make stuff. do what YOU like. cringe culture is dead, make bad art
yes!! if executed correctly it even makes the drawing more pleasing to the eye or eye catching it took me a while to get over my obsession with good proportions tho
REALLL.
I always get criticised by art teachers for the insane proportions on my character (especially my persona) but I like my style and nobody can change that.
Iβm a young artist and I like drawing cartoony eyes so I can express characters thoughts and not have to draw mouthsβ¦β¦.. my friends donβt really like it tho
I think those are very well done cartoony eyes! Keep doing what youβre doing and theyβll get even better. Cartoons are an important section of art. Think most animation and some comics.
Personally i think it depends on the style you're going for, for example i think it'd work fine if you're doing cartoonish drawings and exaggerate the proportions to give more emotions to it
It doesn't work though if you're trying to go for realism and make things realistic (again just my opinion!)
Some exaggerated traits tend to be result from the way an artist prefers to draw something, they probably could draw more "realistic" eyes if they had to, but they prefer to draw the way they do it because its how they like it and more comfortable
99% of the time they're not even actually complaining about proportions in any sort of genuine way, they're just trying to make their personal opinion sound more '' legitimate ''.
Like fixating on female characters in One Piece as if any One Piece character has '' realistic '' proportions lmao.
I always hate that it feels like thereβs some societal expectation to have art as realisitic as possible because it always makes me think my art is worse than it already is
To add, for me an Art Style aren't just the lines and technique, but it's also the message behind it, the emotions, the mood, basically the expression of it~
I HEAVILY prefer those exaggerated styles. Let the hair go through the eyes. Let the eyes flow off the head. Let the joints do as they please. Let your style be simply as it is
Also, donβt be afraid of your style changing as you continue to practice your craft. While not the greatest example, Picassos style changed drastically over his life (due to mental degradation, iirc), and people still herald him as one of the greatest artists in the world.
What I learned about artstyle is that you can't just go and search for one from the start you gotta learn the basics first and only then apply your style so it's easier for you to draw
same with exaggerated proportions
I think disproportionate art styles look cool depending on what theyβre drawing, proportionate or not, itβs still art and can look nice. I would love people to know his.
YES like sure understanding anatomy is VERY important for learning and it's something that should be studied BUT ALSO HAVE FUN, DRAW A GUY WITH A GIANT HEAD OR A CREATURE art should be fun especially for a beginner artist
If think itβs a matter of knowing the rules (correct proportions) and how to break them. Not everyone has to be master at realism, but understanding the proportions is still key.
Oh I never said that wasn't the case. But many still mistake obvious artistic choices for bad art. It's obv when it's an artistic choice vs when it isn't.
I agree. I also think dismissing any art based on someoneβs (lack) of experience or style is pretty shortsighted. One can learn a lot even from beginners!
Not to be confrontational, but if you're implying I'm dismissing others' art based on their lack of experience I'm certainly not. I could be reading this wrong but it's coming off that way.
I think especially in the West there's just a fixation around '' realism '', and culturally people have been conditioned into viewing realism as superior.
Which isn't rly the case elsewhere in the world, and wasn't always the case in Europe either.
It often feels like it's an especially prevalent obsession with video games atm.
So many big name games, and even a few indies pushing 100gb to 200+gb and beyond just to get the crispiest 8k pores possible.
yeah iβve mostly noticed it in online spaces and in the west, i havenβt really ventured much to the east so i canβt really say anything on their behave but itβs pretty disheartening to see younger artists quit because theyβre pressured away from stylization to be more βskilledβ
My favorite part about One Piece is EXACTLY this! The wild differences in anatomy add a unique wave of life through the entire story. Never be afraid to create in the moment and let your next piece talk back to you too!
When i was less experienced i used to do that often, especially with the arms, hands, and feet. But since i didn't get as much likes, i thought i needed to change.
Y E S.
I AGREE WITH THIS SO BADLY.
to me, exaggerated proportions can strengthen so many things realistic stuff cant! like expressions or designs!
to the stranger reading, spread those creative wings and FLY
Very true, style is for the artist, characters can be realistic, exaggerated, chibi, cartoonish...uh...
So i don't know how to end this super eloquently so....yeah.
i think it's also ok to not care about knowing the rules of anatomy , or physics , or color theory . as long as an artist enjoys what they create , it's perfect . unless it's genuinely harmful for any number of reasons
BY THE WAY: I am in no way slamming on less experienced artists by any means. We all start somewhere. So please don't take this post that way.
I just wish that art with less realism in proportions wasn't picked apart so heavily.
It reminds me a book called right side of the brain, that explains the reason why were not comfortable exagerating the artstlye because our left side of the brain thinks it's not properly proportion to look at. But if we use our right side of the brain it looks right. This is true for forshortening.
Also important- that just because an art style doesn't appeal to you doesn't make it bad art! Nobody likes everything and there's nothing that's universally liked. If you don't like an art style, just move on instead of berating the artist.
so true like i don't draw noses anymore and my art style is not realistic at all but i feel like i've become a better artist than i was when i did.
wait its luluyam your music is fire
Bruh, this brings me back to college, where I would witness many young artists. Auguring with teachers, that their lack of proportion control is a part of their art style.
When really, they were doing themselves a disservice
hi hello thats us..
trying to experiment and get out our comfort zone is hard.. and frankly we dont like having to struggle with realism as its a pain in the ASS
i could go on and on and on, but i just wanna draw my favorite media and have fun, y'know
I've found that purposely making things just bigger is always fun, big weapons, big clothing, big boots, etc, its always fun to see how big you can make something and get away with it!
Yes, but its also important to not excuse bad understanding of how to draw the human body for an art style. Exagerated proportions should be intentional
i cant for the life of me draw bodies/proper proportions so i just draw non-human creatures to avoid people telling me the proportions dont look human β¨οΈ
I dont think its experience thing at all. Art as always is in the eyes of the beholder. Some will view a style as bad and other will not. Thats just the nature of art.
truth!! I don't believe in "bad art" anyways dude (unless its like. problematic or morally fucked up) but all art is beautiful in its own way because it's art in general ππ i love humans
As a less experienced artist, I agree. Before, I was decent at proportions, I sucked at posing. Now I know that when you exaggerate proportions for a pose, it looks much better and cooler than if you kept everything proportional.
Honestly I think this has to do with the commodification of art on the internet and everything being flattened as "content". Because everything is expected to fit a mold, a brand, a tend, a "core" people have harder time placing things that are unique and unfamiliar with.
It can kinda be compared to 3D animation where models are stretched and compressed to crazy degrees and look absolutely wild to the animator but when it's viewed from the camera perspective it looks like a very well done frame.

I love that sht to my core, it brings me joy
You just gotta keep the style consistant though the whole drawing, if you do it will always turn out nice!
Advanced techniques like focal length and fish eye distortion practically require the artist to "break" what they know to make it look believable.
Knowing the anatomy rules means you can break them
Also, donβt be afraid of your style changing as you continue to practice your craft. While not the greatest example, Picassos style changed drastically over his life (due to mental degradation, iirc), and people still herald him as one of the greatest artists in the world.

Everytime I try it looks like drawings I did from middle school π
