I got them a soft carrier that opens at the top, with the possibly naive hope of making upcoming trips to the vet to get immunised less traumatic (for me)

had to take my tripod, indoor only cat to the vet. She does not like going anywhere so I got a soft, top-open carrier and left it on a table. She got into it and made a bed of it, using it daily. On vet day she was in it so I just zipped it shut and took her to the car. She even still uses it!!
I had a front zipper open soft side carrier for my kitty. I put a warming pad in it, the faux sheep type, left it open in the living room. He would go and nap in it. Not sure if a top loading one would have worked tbh
I've done the same and it's much easier to get him in. He still hates it but it's less traumatic all round. I do use a twisty tie to secure the zip though because he claws at it from inside and could open it and escape.
Trust me, it works. I leave the thing out in the living room. One cat sleeps on top of it. None of them fear it or are triggered by its presence when it’s vet time.
If they get too stressed at the vet, gabapentin helps. My sweet little pussycat who loves everyone gets it for his vet visits so he doesn’t turn into a murderous tiger and go on a killing spree.
didn't happen they just conform to the contours of the pillow cases and sleep. ... it was the best way of cat wrangling in the days when i had to get public transport to a vet ... not much cop i suspect with a seriously ill or injured animal but for routine stuff ideal...
I would leave the carrier out all the time for the cats to get use to it. After that, it was taking them on car rides in the carrier to the pet store. They enjoyed it so much they didn't care where we were going, which worked nice for vet visits

Both cats enjoyed spending time in it.
Until the day of packing them up. It was a full on battle.
After the move they would not go near either carrier
