Star Trek storylines since the 60s have assumed things would get harder before they get easier. I don't think that's evidence of any special insight. Things have *been* getting harder.

Star Wars is "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away," however much like us the characters look.
Other mass-market sci-fi is mostly dystopian. A lot of it - rightly and usefully - critiques the present.
Germany is a democracy. A respected one. Ukraine may be under attack, but they also threw out Putin puppet.
As dark as things get we can recover if we just keep trying.
