Frasier says "This is the best day in the history of Cheers, nothing could go wrong," and immediately Sam and Diane enter and Sam announces they're getting married. So everyone stares at them in horror, and after a very long beat of silence, Norm says "Congratulations," unenthusiastically. Good shit
You can tell the Charles bros are writing for the finale, because suddenly, Sam's back to being a real person and screams at everyone for not supporting him. Those early seasons had lots of uncomfortable moments of realistic friendship drama, which disappeared once Rebecca showed up.
These final fifteen minutes of "Cheers" are my favorite sitcom finale bits. Everyone just hanging out, after the scary argument they had with Sam about Diane, and Sam apologizing in his own way. There's some really touching stuff. Norm telling Sam that Sam's true love is the bar is real as fuck.
Sam finally realizing that the bar is his true love is one reason Old Man Frasier didn't sit well with me, because Grammer kept saying in interviews that the reason he doesn't visit Cheers is because it shut down. That's just a sudden downer ending for Sam Malone for a dumbass spinoff of a spinoff.
Norm being the last one to leave is so great. The one great barfly, talking about how much he wants to take his the stool he sits on, and telling Sam that Sam truly loves the bar. It's so good. Of course Norm is the last to leave in the finale.
I don’t think I’ve seen Cheers since it first went out (in Ireland). When I was too young, and it went over my head a bit. I’m a bit afraid to watch it now!
