Would it be cheaper to get a nuc or smaller pc with an i5/7 with integrated video card that supports hardware transcoding? I’m drawing a blank on which video card it is in, but I think it’s in most 8 or 9th gen intels and above.

I have a little backup server (Framework laptop board in a Coolermaster case), the problem is that Plex needs someone to be logged in, so each time a windows update happens, we lose plex.

What I liked about the NAS solution is that it's always available...

Gotcha, makes sense. And agree, I have a synology, but try to keep all files under 16GB or I get the same issues. I enjoy the always on of the synology as well.
Does the framework stutter at all? Could you schedule updates so your around when they happen and not have much downtime?

Yeah, I feel the file size could be a problem... I changed the updates, but then I always forget that I have to update it 😅 The joys of a brain like mine. At some point it just does the update anyway, and then I lose access again 🤣 It's a me issue, but if I can work around it then I do...

There are registry changes you can do that will auto-login on boot, IIRC. I did that for my VR machine a couple years ago.

Alternatively, this is a place where Linux would shine.

It would be, but I'd lose the other things that I keep on there (and were the reason for buying it...) Plex was a cherry, rather than the cake...

So the Plex server for Windows doesn’t remember log in? I believe mine did, but it was some 5 years ago or more that I last had in installed on Windows

I'm going to see if I can make it work... If so I'll use that machine connected to the Plex server... And try to figure out how to move the library information over, rather than setting everything up again 🤣

I replaced my aging 418 with a 923+ this year and it's been great. It wasn't terribly cheap, but having only fairly recently upgraded the disks I could simply move them to the new chassis.
I spend enough time on IT at work - home stuff needs to be straightforward 🙂

I run Plex and file storage. I don't run VMs. I've not had any trouble with Plex 🙂
I also haven't added the SSD cache yet - it's on my list, but I've not felt a pressing need yet.
Drives are 4x4GB Western Digital Red

I bought the DS423+ instead of the DS9xx for this exact reason. I have no problem playing MKV files but then again, I might not have the best video resolution in the files I tested with. According to Plex web site the DS423+ can handle all resolutions while the Ryzen ones do not.
