This is correct — and, in fact, typical. Opposition parties typically aren't the driving force behind movements against democratic backsliding.

1) is exactly what happened when when Whigs refused to stand up to Southern Democratic attempts to overturn the Missouri compromise and expand slavery further west and north. It gave us the original Republicans.

Yes! I don’t know where everybody on here got the idea that every political movement (small m, like day to day movement of opinion) is a top down thing governed by party leadership. Parties follow where the votes are! Show them there’s votes where you want them to go!
