a regime that could consolidate itself would be able to hold the Olympics and use it as a propaganda display, like Hitler did in the 1930s. The fact that you cannot imagine Trump pulling this off should say a lot about his weaknesses

The ironic thing is that competent dictatorships can host international events because they can decide to leave those visitors alone, and it will happen. And liberal democracies can host these events. But it may be hard for an incompetent, chaotic, authoritarian regime like Trump's to do so.
