Many of the homes along this stretch of the Malibu coast have burned down. We need a fair buy-out program for the affected owners—between fires, mudslides, and sea-level rise, I just don't see how it makes any sense to rebuild.

Public accèss to the ocean. An oceanfront promenade for people who are local and from all over the world to walk, ride, skate, whatever and hear waves crash. Engineering that discourages it as a shortcut for highway traffic. Maybe turn the ocean side into a long narrow National Park.

Everyone loves to be by the sea. It's something innately within us. It's such easy pickings for food, I'm totally convinced that's the route most of our ancestors used to populate the world.
As much as possible, it should be free for all to enjoy.

That's not the kind of access I mean. I'm talking full public space, more like Newport Municipal Beach. Access shouldn't be dependent on low tide 😏 or so limited, and essentially be a mansion's front yard. And it then could include wetlands or other useful features.

Yeah, love that and agree with the sentiment, but think it's critical to acknowledge the hard-won access and public rights that do exist - especially as they come under renewed attack. Also, don't think wetlands are in the cards for this stretch - these are coastal cliffs, plus armoring for PCH.

yeah, my wetlands comment isn't specific to that stretch. I don't even know that wetlands are appropriate much of the Pacific coast (like they'd be here on the Gulf or south coast), just trying to make an example about using coastline land for multiple purposes, eg greater storm resilience, etc.

Definitely applicable in other stretches! CA has lost >95% of its historical wetlands to development and water-management, but two of the most significant remaining ones are on either side of this stretch, at Malibu Lagoon and Ballona Creek.
