The UK and Japan have some things in common, so I kind of get what you mean.
Totally agree. But Shibuya’s unique history, nature, and culture have been shaped (and shaken) by politics and big corporations—it’s all pretty complicated.
When I was a kid, this river had little fish swimming in it… Seeing it now always gives me mixed feelings.

Actually, my company also has a presence in NC, so I know about that hurricane! The server went down, and I was panicking in Japan...
One business, about 20 minutes drive south of me, has caused a market strain, Baxter, they produce IV bags, medical tubing, etc.
