I get the sentiment, & academic science is obviously of inestimable worth to the future, but it isn't exactly critical to the day to day function of the economy. It doesn't seem like a strike of scientists has enough labor power to achieve anything.

Is that wrong?

I mean scientists are running your lab tests at the hospital. Sometimes those are sent to academic labs because you have some weird shit. Also you might be fond of having fresh foods, and safe drugs. Or cleaning products that don’t gas you to death. Scientists do a lot of federally funded work.

Agreed that non-academic work by scientists, like the examples you mentioned (hospital labwork, quality & safety testing), would have an economic impact. Those people striking might get noticed, at least eventually.

(I had thought you meant mainly academic scientists.)

Yes. I also used the example of how these overlap with academics. Like when they need a researchers special expertise. Which is quite often. In fact there are many collaborations with the academy and industry. Directly and indirectly.
