My best guess is that it's due to the amount of new art needed. Redoing a bunch of commander staples with Spiderman art would be a huge undertaking.

I genuinely think the average mtg player would have preferred spider-man if it was just a set of pre-cons, as is if you want to build a Spider-Man themed deck now, you’r have to hope they print enough staples in standard that reflect the art of the characters.

May have to do with art and how the character can be portrayed. “You can only portray Spider-man on cards X, Y, and Z using this art that we have to approve first” kills box art and promotional material. It’s their IP and their cash cow, so unsurprising if they’re extremely defensive.

This makes sense. Wondering if they could use a different char as the commander for a pre con in spideys colors and in include him in the deck just not him being ton the box art as a promotion. Eg they use kingpin as a commander and just have spidey in there as a card.

Of the possible Marvel properties we can expect sets from (Avengers, X-Men, probably something with F4 and Guardians), Spidey is the narrowest. There's the least "extra" they'd need decks to squeeze into.

I feel like we don't need precons with EVERY set, given we got 2 with Aetherdrift, 5 coming with Tarkir, 4 with FF we're already up to 11, and I expect probably the 4 bending tribes in ATLA + whatever eternites has.

Is nonstop >20 precons a year the desired amount? It feels like a lot to me

The pitch for UB is that it is supposed to be bringing in new players. In that case, the UB sets MOST OF ALL need to be the ones with precons, to give the new players a very easy "Buy this one product, and you are good to go play some games" so Spiderman isn't the set to skip them on
