to be honest- it’s embarrassing to admit- but my relationship with references is exactly like my partner’s relationship with healthy food. he knows it’s there, he knows it’s better for him, he knows it should make his life easier, but he just doesn’t fucking know how to cook it.

i so easily become a slave of a reference when i use them. i stop thinking of what i’m supposed to be doing and start thinking of how to force what i’m doing to look more like my reference. like my critical thinking just goes out of the window as soon as i lay my eye on a reference provided to me.

So my solution is to sketch first, and then fetch anatomical refs. The other solution is to try to enchance the ref; as with studies

I also tend to get several that's around my goal; and not one

i think i also use your first solution! i try to remember the reference, then try not to look at it at all when i do the sketch, and in the end i check the reference to see if what i have is good enough. the trick is not to get stuck looking at it too often like my life depends on it!

I know the feeling! References are sometimes incredibly limiting. But I've seen the trick for them lately to just block shapes, then redraw shapes simplified/stylisef and draw everything into those modified shapes. Haven't tried it yet

i just take a couple looks at the reference to remember it and then don’t look at it at all to prevent myself from getting stuck with it till eternity :D glad to know i’m not alone with this

i was told by my teachers that the true masters do not need any pictures to look at when they create art and i was obsessed with the thought that i have to store everything i see in my head so i could use it all later as a reference. the result: i don’t know how to properly use a reference.

the result number two: there is a ton of useful reference information stored in my head. the result number three: i had to NOT look at the provided reference to create the picture above, just had to remember it.

there’s something wrong with me and i have to start using more references to fix it.
