This was a necessary, but insufficient condition for Twitter’s demise. Once they cut off third party clients the end was inevitable. Musk could’ve got away with most of his antics if API access was still a thing.

I totally agree. One of the strengths of this platform is staying open and enabling the development of a community. One of the Twitter's biggest losses was closing itself off the developers and its user base
