I’m thinking more: phone with WiFi -> phone on 4G -> phone on 5G -> VPN

Though maybe Google rejects QUIC session resumptions from different world regions.

From my laptop I just revoked my desktop machine's gmail access and it was instantaneous. I'm in the UK btw. I wonder if my phone is different? Now I've got to get my yubikey out.

You should try an app with OAuth2-based access permissions like an app with read-only access to calendar. I think GMail may just not use JWTs

Looks like it may not. I've signed my phone out and while I have some read access to local data, trying to compose anything makes me log in again.
