thinking again about how kids are taught to read under a memorization model now instead of phonics?? apparently??? and as someone who's had to learn chinese growing up: why would u give up the benefits of the fucking alphabet if u have one already

semi-related but i read yotsuba vol 1 in jp recently after learning the kanas and the sheer power of 10+ years of being a weeb (and knowing some chinese). literally just sounding things out and being like. oh actually i do know that word
never let anyone tell u that *checks notes* inhaling anime episodes and subbed vocaloid videos when ur supposed to be doing homework as a child won't pay off 10 years later??
just kidding do ur homework kids learn how to read ur native language
DUDE I JUST LISTENED TO A PODCAST ABOUT THIS thankfully reading education here is shifting in a better direction but yeah i cant imagine having trouble reading and then they like…….dont even teach you how to sound things out….bruh….
yeah i think they're rolling it back??? but wow reading comments of kids who were set back by this policy is so deeply sad, the education system really made their life harder for no damn reason
