You make a great point! One that more people should take heed. We do need to remember, it’s a program that is fed random information some true, but mostly fantasy, because they mainly use the web, and that’s what most of the web is, some real info, but a ton of stories, mostly untrue
I would say it is a grey area. If I search something trivial on google I’m met with multiple garbage articles filled with ads (probably written by AI) that never actually give me the answer. If I search the same thing using one of the new AI, I get a clear answer right away.
I have used AI for search instead of Google for months now and so far it hasn't failed me. I acknowledge it may sometimes make mistakes, but I can always use the provided links to verify, and the convenience far outweighs any downsides. Also, AI can find very specific things Google can't.
#chatgpt #search doesn’t work. As in at all. It’s just not reliable and most of the time the links don’t work. #google is pretty shit these days. But at least it works.
As someone whose work performance and, at some points in my life, survival depended on discerning the truth of the matter, I am unable to understand the desperate efforts to use stochastic parrots, except in terms of some character flaw.
And the energy it must consume to get a simple fact must be huge compared to just looking for it by yourself, killing a fly with a nuclear bomb kind of thing
Each chatGPT query takes about ten times as much as a standard web search. Google Search is about the same energy expenditure thanks to having built-in LLM functionality nowadays.
