Jackson Street today doesn't make a lot of sense. That's because of urban renewal in the 20th century, which saw a big part of north Durand razed in order to build City Hall. Jackson Street West is now part of the City Hall parking lot, for all intents and purposes.

It picks up on the other side of City Hall, as Jackson Street East after James Street South, and runs east through the Corktown neighbourhood all the way to Wellington Street where it ends (which was where it ended in the late 19th century).

A curious part of Jackson Street's history is how its namesake, Edward Jackson, is related to the naming of Wesanford Place (just off Caroline Street South). Jackson's son in law, William E. Sanford (W. E. Sanford = Wesanford) built his mansion on Jackson Street.

When the house was gone, a cul de sac was eventually created where you can see a small cluster of houses today. These houses occupy the estate's land and, oddly enough, likely house more people as a result of their modern configuration.

If you look closely, along Jackson Street West, you can see old walls, which would have formed part of W. E. Sanford's estate at the time and are a reminder of the strange history of this area and how the City adapted to the changes as a result of urban renewal.
