San Francisco had cafes when I arrived in 1984, and had been there for quite a while before that. Places like Higher Grounds and Artemis Cafe and Sacred Grounds Cafe. Many. Many are still open, like Caffe Trieste, and Caffe La Boheme. Every neighborhood had/has its own special place. Truly.
