In 1890 there was HUGE poverty amning the vast majority of people. Extreme conditions. But also development because of new industrial jobs and workers uniting in unions fighting to give workers decent wages.

The point is not that those who came earlier are more American. That’s not what it means to be American. The point is that we’re not just wealthier than we used to be - there’s also a lot more of us, including many whose families and forebears weren’t part of this country yet in the 1890s.
