still, there are some moments I play one and I'm like "authors-for-het-romance, please... as someone in the target audience, I do NOT need to be babied-this-much into being able to self-insert"
a lot of the male MCs (I've seen) feel written "too safe"/same-y 😖
well, that could also just be me lacking in expanding my horizons tho!
I'm sure there's good stuff out there and I just gotta dig a bit deep lol. but it does feel like there's a perpetuation of 'straight guys love self-inserting' and it's like no, I can enjoy otome game MCs and they're less bland!
I think there's a big element of personal preference involved when it comes to galge protags that's a little harder to pin down since the MC's personality type is never really advertised in the face of [girl list]
But the tone of the protagonist will often be similar across games from specific companies, which can help with finding games you like.
In general, the "snarky/sarcastic cool guy" personality is fairly popular (e.g., Grisaia, HoshiMemo, Key games - albeit more toned down) which may be good or bad.
Since galge are usually charage, the girls' individual routes do tend to be more compelling than the protagonist himself since they're focused on the girl's individual development.
I will! I did read Umineko (needs no introduction) and Echo (a well known horror themed furry visual novel) between late last year and this year so I am attempting to do that more often.
Stop playing visual novels on consoles. Embrace PC to press A one time, turning on auto mode so you can do nothing but read visual novels for the next 60 hours of your life. 😌
