This is in no way a "Netflix did phenomenal" post but it's infuriating to hear and see so many people just compare it to, what...the Super Bowl? The World Cup? I would argue WWE is much more of a test than a boxing match designed to overload servers. This was a stress test, not a best case example - ThreadSky

I’d also argue the Super Bowl and the World Cup are rarely streaming successes. Most people watch those on cable — the streams often fall quite behind and sometimes are even if lower quality.

Precisely. And those events are so rare. I think there's a valid conversation around whether streaming alone versus with a broadcast partner can handle the load of a handful of events, but all things considered, Netflix did pretty well.

tl;dr you can't use this fight as the basis for live sports streaming technical prowess. You're talking about an average of, what...14-20 million viewers a game domestically for NFL games? Few million for the NBA? Even globally with time differences, not much larger.

They've sort of set the Christmas day games up as mini Superbowls, complete with a Beyonce half time show. It might not do Tyson - Paul figures, but I'd expect it to do at least half that viewership.

Yeah, I'd say it's probably going to hit around 30M-40M households. More competition on that day (including NBA), but time zones will be better. EMEA and LATAM can tune in. But NFL isn't as global as the fight, and Beyonce fans may just watch on Instagram or TikTok.

This is the big debate. My current stance is that it makes no sense for Netflix to bet on churn reduction content (like regular season games) when they need to better advertising friendly or advertising built in content first and then create social-first event content, like the fight.
