I can think of some things for which the ratio of enthusiastic words written and spoken to actual progress is higher than it is for small nuclear reactors in Britain. But it is quite difficult.

It’s essentially a blind empirical ‘technology’ like medieval medicine. We don’t even understand the essence of the fine structure constant or what a charm quark is doing in a proton. We are but quacks when messing about with the strong nuclear force.
