In my paper, I analyse the electoral repercussions of a coal phase-out in the presence of compensation for affected groups as well as active involvement of labour and business interests in political decision-making – factors that the existing literature expects to mitigate political backlash. 2/n

I posit that affected communities still perceive economic grievances fuelling political disengagement in the form of higher abstention rates. I argue that these grievances lead affected communities to punish those parties with close ties to workers in the affected industries. 4/n

For my empirical analysis, I use an own original dataset which contains information on coal closures between 2007 and 2022 and municipal-level data on regional, federal and local election results in North Rhine-Westphalia between 2000 and 2022. 5/n

I estimate the effect of the first coal closure per municipality on voting behaviour using staggered difference-in-differences models. 6/n

I find strong support for an association of coal closures with backlash: concretely, via a negative effect on vote shares for the SPD and a positive effect on abstention rates in affected municipalities. Moreover, I provide indicative evidence for the underlying mechanisms. 7/n
